the body shop | seaweed skincare

i've been using the above items from the body shop's seaweed skin care range for a couple of months now, so i thought it only right to throw my two cents out there on how i've been getting on with them.

the face mask is probably my favourite item of the three, promising to 'purify, cleanse and control excess oil' for combination and oily skin types. i generally use this once or twice a week, or after a night out to rid my skin of all the nasties that drinking alcohol and sleeping in your make up (i know, naughty me!) helps your skin to accumulate. the mask itself is really thick and you only need a small amount to coat your whole face, it smells somewhat salty but fresh, and i sit with it on for around 10 - 15 minutes. while the mask is hardening, you can see small dots all over your face where the mask is working to rid your pores of dirt, and after washing it off, my skin feels plump, clean and fresh, and just generally helps me feel as though i've done my skin a whole load of good. because i don't use it all that often, i probably wouldn't begrudge paying another £12 for a second tub because it does as it claims, is a nice product all around and lasts long enough to somewhat justify the price tag.

this is the first cruelty free moisturiser i've purchased, having previously used a nivea oil free one, and i'd say this product does pretty much an identical job to my old moisturiser, it just costs a hell of a lot more. the moisturiser is nice, with a lightweight feel and consistency that absorbs into your skin well and dries quickly, i just find it isn't quite worth the hefty price tag. if money wasn't an issue, i'd probably be repurchasing, but due to the small amount you receive i'm tempted to try out a lightweight simple moisturiser next because you get a lot more product for a lot less money.

finally, the pore perfector. of all the items, i really, really wanted to love this and sing around about how my pores became practically non existent and my skin was supple and even, but in reality, i don't think the product did much for my skin at all. my skin tone's still a bit off, i can still see the pores on my nose and chin, and if anything, i think anything i may have noticed is probably all in my head because i wanted the product to work so badly. so, all in all, i'm pretty disappointed with this, and with it costing £11 and me being almost at the end of the bottle, i can't say i think it's worth the money at all.

pretty mixed reviews altogether, but the body shop's still somewhere i'm fond of popping in to have a browse around even if a few of their products have let me down. would i recommend these products? no, probably not. they're not cheap, and they do nothing more than a mediocre job, so in future i guess i could be tempted to pay a little more for skincare products to try and achieve the effect i'm aiming for. that being said, everybody's skin is different and just because one product doesn't work for somebody, it doesn't mean it won't work for somebody else. if i had to recommend one product, however, it'd definitely be the face mask. ah well, you can always rely on the skin, hair and body items to leave you smooth and smelling delicious!

floral kimono

floral kimono: charity shop
black cami: primark
necklace: topshop (old)
ring: craft market
bag: ebay
boots: internacionale (via blog sale)

victory rolls have become my hairstyle of choice lately on second/third day hair because now i've mastered them they're so blummin' quick and easy to do, and also work well on the unwashed, slightly textured hair that my hair seems to become after a few spritzes of dry shampoo. perfect! i'm also at a weird stage of 'do i or don't i want to grow out my fringe?' so i keep opting for either a side or centre parting to keep my overgrown fringe out of my eyes. will i manage to grow it out? probably not, going by the previous failed attempts i've previously made to do so.

i snagged this kimono from a charity shop for £1.50, and i'm a little bit in love with it. my friend told me the other day that his friend said to him "i would dress like robyn, but i can't afford to shop at topshop" and it had me laughing for quite a while. topshop? me? does she not know how incredibly tight i am with my money?! i guess i'd kind of like to use that comment to back up my point of you don't need a lot of money to be able to dress how you like, you just need a good eye and a little bit of patience to find stuff for pennies in charity shops, and often primark. a flattering comment none the less, i guess!

if you have a particularly keen eye, you may have noticed my new glasses here. i'm still waiting on my second pair to be delivered to specsavers and made up for me, so stay tuned for a post about them when they arrive!

sunday synopsis

after completely forgetting about my weekly update post last week, i'm back again this sunday to ramble to you all about the events that've taken place in my life this previous week - woohoo (?!) monday marked my first day back at uni for my final term, and because i finished off the entirety of my picture book over spring break, i've only really had tutors to see, my work to send off and my book to make twice. on wednesday i was in uni bright and early to mount a few spreads of my work and package them up alongside my finished dummy to send off for the macmillan prize, and after seeing it all finalised and good to go i was overcome with such a ridiculous sense of pride - to see something i'd written and illustrated in its entirety was fulfilling in ways that i can't explain, and i'm now so proud to have the work sat in my portfolio; watch my blog over the next week or so as i'll no doubt upload the project to my online portfolio for you all to peek at, if you so wish to!

on friday graham rawle came back to visit and give us all another talk, this time focussing on storytelling, making it all the more relevant to what it is i'm interested in and an interesting and entertaining listen. a tutor very kindly arranged for me to see him in the afternoon to have a flick through my portfolio and discuss my work which was completely bizarre but absolutely fabulous, and altogether he had some pretty wise words to share - however lame that sounds - and was an all round really nice, funny guy, and i definitely feel really lucky to have had the chance to sit down and have a conversation with him; definitely a fond uni memory i'll take away with me!

this thursday sees my last formal assessment that's accompanied by a presentation - woo hoo! - and then the next couple of weeks sees me finishing off my written module and dissertation proposal before settling down for the last couple of weeks of uni where in which the end of year exhibition takes place, and i'm so stupidly excited to see everyone's hard work displayed for everyone to celebrate! what a year second year has been, however difficult it's been in places. it's funny to think this time last year i was so full of doubt about the course, and i'm now so confident, happy and self-assured as ever - what a difference a year makes!

pinny & puppies

pinafore: primark
shirt: primark
necklace: topshop (old)
socks: primark
shoes: primark

today sees the last of my backlog of outfit posts - from here on everything will be posted as it's worn, yippee! while clearing out some old clothes, i picked this shirt up but just couldn't find it in me to part with it - the off white and browns in the french bulldogs seem to work really well with my orange hair, so i thought it'd be a decision i'd regret if i were to let go of it. i then set about giving it a new lease of life paired up with something i hadn't previously paired it with, and thought it worked well with this pinny due to the brassy tones on its buttons. i also pulled out these socks - that i picked up a while ago but never actually wore - because the colours compliment the shirt really well. other than the necklace (which primark did a version of anyway!) this outfit sees me head to toe in primark, which further makes me question the people who claim to not find anything in there. my advice? look further!

lush | dark angels

as i was coming to the end of my tub of herbalism, i decided it was time to head to lush to see what else they had to offer to help combat my pesky combination skin. while speaking to a shop assistant, i asked for something a little more powerful than herbalism as i felt that it wasn't quite working the wonders it had originally worked on my skin, and she pointed me in the direction of dark angels.

i initially noticed that the product itself looks very scary, however after popping the lid open and having a sniff, its scent had drawn me in. it's probably one that's not going to appeal to everyone, smelling like a mixture of aniseed and liquorice, but i've always been drawn to a somewhat overpowering, sweet stench. after a chat with the assistant i was informed that dark angels is something of an abrasive exfoliator as well as a cleanser, and so to be careful not to let it dry out my skin too much by moisturising well after using it. having being told this, i decided to purchase this as well as repurchasing herbalism so i could use herbalism on a morning to wake me up gently, and then have a deep cleanse in the evening with dark angels to rid my face of whatever it may have encountered throughout the day.

after a couple of weeks using dark angels alongside herbalism, i noticed that i much preferred how dark angels left my skin feeling, and also the experience of using it. since using dark angels, i really don't feel that herbalism cleans my skin properly at all; where herbalism leaves my skin feeling fresh, it doesn't give me the 'deep clean', plump feeling that dark angels does, and over time i've begun to abandon herbalism a little, in favour of a deeper cleanse. now i know dark angels isn't quite as scary as it looks or sounds, i'll probably drop herbalism altogether and just use this on it's own because i really, really love it.

if you have somewhat oily skin that's prone to blemishes, i'd definitely recommend heading down to your local lush shop and have a nosy at dark angels. an assistant happily gave me a small tester pot to try before i committed to the buy, so if you're not sure yourself, ask and you'll probably receive! it's always lovely to chat to assistants in lush because they're so happy to help and are genuinely interested in the products and helping you find what's right for you!

blog sale: depop

i've seen a few blog sales floating around as of late, and after arriving home to a bag of clothes i'd never gotten around to selling, i decided to finally put some of my unloved clothes/bags/shoes onto depop to try and find new homes for. everything's priced between £8 and £15 and those prices include postage, so i'd like to think you could grab yourself a bargain if anything catches your eye! brands range from primark to new look to topshop and there are also some vintage found items in there, too.

you can find me on depop under the username of 'xrobynm', or if you don't have the app you can view my profile online here. feel free to send me a message on the app if anything tickles your fancy, and if don't have the app, feel free to drop me a comment on this post and i can be in touch with further information/item details if necessary. thanks for looking!

sunday synopsis

evenin'! these weeks at home do seem to fly by, i can't quite believe i've only one week left until i head back to uni again for my final term, which will hopefully be an easy going term and provide a chance to unwind from the sheer madness that has been second year, as well as the chance to celebrate all our hard work and achievements, yay! as of right this minute i've finished up all 13 spreads of my book, the cover and the title page, and tomorrow i'll be getting up super early to finish my end papers which really shouldn't take all that long (i say that now, but i always find something to make the job last longer than it should - always giving myself extra work!), and will then be emailing off the first entire draft of my picture book to my tutors and awaiting a response to see what final tweaks will need making throughout next week. i'm both nervous and super excited about submitting to macmillan, but i think more than anything i'm just so unbelievably proud of what i've achieved in just 9 weeks and am looking forward to getting my finished book professionally printed so it can sit on my bookshelf as a reminder of "hey robyn, look what you can do when you dedicate yourself to something!" a reminder i'll need to take with me throughout third year so i can work my ass off just as hard and hopefully reap the benefits because of it!

in social news, on friday i headed to the party as planned, which was actually hawaiin themed and i'd forgotten! we had a fab time drinking from various fruit such as pineapples, melons and coconuts, scooping out fruity jelly shots, dancing to club tropicana in an 80s club and singing along to let it go by frozen in an extremely heart felt and theatrical fashion. all in all, a fantastic night with some of my nearest and dearest from home and a well deserved mini break from all the grafting i've been doing - home for 2 weeks and i've been out with friends twice, ouch! no pain no gain though, right?!

baby pink

coat: charity shop
top: charity shop
skirt: select
satchel: primark
boots: missguided

while on the subject of babies, say hello to ole' chubby cheeks and baby face! a couple of things i'll forever be cursed with, sigh. while out shopping on tuesday i decided to do a crawl of all my local charity shops, and completely unintentionally i stumbled upon this lovely pink coat. for a while now i've been admiring how you lovely bloggers style your pink coats, but due to them costing £40+ and the fact that i may only end up wearing it a handful of times, i had no intention of picking one up for myself. that all changed however when i saw the price tag of £5 on this coat, and so i decided to snap it up while i could because for a fiver it didn't matter if i only wore it a handful of times!

i also decided to have a snoop around my local select, and once again it pleasantly surprised me and i took home this check design skirt for a mere £6. i'd tried a similar one on in primark with bigger checks on it, but it felt and looked a little cheap so i decided to leave it, and what a good decision that turned out to be! even at £6, the fabric is fairly thick and somewhat velvety and is well worth the price tag. you've impressed me again, select!

animal print

hat: h&m
dress: charity shop
jacket: ebay
necklace: primark
satchel: primark
boots: missguided

i was headed into town today with my mum, so before we left i took to the garden in the hope of getting a few more outfit photos than i managed yesterday, and ended up failing even harder than i had originally. hats off to you guys who frequently photograph your outfits outside, i just didn't have the patience to wait for the sun coming out after hiding behind the clouds for a few minutes, for it to then hide back behind them within the 10 seconds it takes for me to press the button and run and pose before the 10 second timer goes off! perhaps it'll be a little easier when we (hopefully) get clearer skies in the summer?

Monday 7 April 2014

oldies (but goodies!)

cardigan: charity shop
dress: charity shop
necklace: primark
satchel: primark
doc martens: charity shop

well, i took to the great outdoors in the hope of taking some slightly more exciting outfits photos, and altogether it was something of a shambles! a roaming poodle, strong winds and the sun flitting in and out from behind the clouds all came together to make the whole process as difficult as possible for me, hence why i only managed to salvage three photos!

when i come home i always dig out clothes i decided not take away with me to uni for various reasons, and this dogtooth cardigan is one that i've once again become rather fond of! i grabbed it from a charity shop a couple of years back and it hasn't received the amount of love it really should have, what with it being such a fantastic find. speaking of fantastic finds, around the same time i also snapped up these really, really old doc martens from a charity shop for just £15 - perhaps my best charity shop find ever!

lately i've taken to wearing my hair in victory rolls in an attempt to make my hair a little more interesting, and it turns out that they don't particularly get on well with freshly washed hair and a lot of wind - who'd have thought?! definitely me, but i thought i'd battle against the facts anyway and then get frustrated when they refused to sit properly on my head, silly me.

Sunday 6 April 2014

sunday synopsis

the first week of my spring break is over and i've not really got much to show for it; aside from a brief shopping trip with my mum, i've done little else other than doggy sit and wade through my mountain of work that's to be completed for when i head back to uni in two weeks time. i seem to have hit another wall with my illustration work, and i've oddly found it difficult to cope with because i haven't been able to nip into uni quickly for a conversation with a tutor that would help to inspire and guide me along throughout the lengthy and challenging process that is illustrating a picture book. don't get me wrong, it's by far the most enjoyable project i've ever had the pleasure of working on, but it's also been the most demanding and challenging and i'm expecting a lot of myself from it because i know it's an adequate push to help prepare me for what's (hopefully!) to come once i've graduated.

i'm hoping to get the last of my book spreads completed this week, and then on friday i'm heading off to a friend's flat in huddersfield for a well deserved (and needed) night out to unwind and just forget about deadlines for an evening. right now i'm very much looking forward to the summer and having time to see friends without having to feel guilty about filling my time up with socialising rather than working, but i'm also looking forward to having time to work for myself knowing there's no strict deadline - hurrah! i have all these issues with deadlines which are ridiculous because my life will be ruled by them if i get into the industry i desire! i guess i'll cope though, ey?

wednesday

 dress: asos
necklace: handmade
sunglasses: primark
rings: primark
socks: primark
shoes: primark

ok, so, first things first: awkward pose of the year award most definitely goes to me. it was one of those days where i had to quickly shoot and go, so please do excuse how terribly goofy i look. it's a curse, sigh.

i'd been eyeing this dress up on the asos website since around october last year, so when i spotted it in the sale while asos were offering an additional 20% off of sale items, i saw it as a sign and finally placed my order - bagging it for £17 from £30 was definitely something i didn't want to miss out on! i initially had issues with the sizing of the dress as there were only size tens left in stock, and when it arrived i found out there was very little room around the bust, but a lot of room around the hips. now, i'm not particularly chesty, and my hips are pretty sizeable, so i'd love to know which flat chested, hippy girl they're modelling these dresses on! however, after a little bit of DIY unpicking some of the stitching around the bust, it fit like a glove and i was good to go. my only issue really with the dress is that it's a drop waist fit rather than sitting around the waist, meaning it's not quite as flattering for my body type as it could be.

the dress has an underdress to it, making it quite warm to wear and fairly bulky. while it'll be fabulous once again in the winter with a chunky coat, throughout the warmer months it's also easy to wear alone, bare legged. i find because of the lace details and buttons on the dress, you don't really need to dress it up all that much, meaning if you're lacking outfit inspiration one day you can be safe in the knowledge of throwing this on with a few pretty rings and fab sunglasses will do the job nicely!

new york haul

while in new york i took advantage of the reduced prices and shops not available locally to me here in the uk, such as elf, forever 21 and a bookstore called books of wonder. i did also grab a primer and setting mist from elf, a 4 pack of burt's bees lip balms (that cost just $10 - bargain!!) and an eric carle pencil case on my visit, however i seem to have left them at my student house so didn't have them to hand to photograph, silly me! my goodies cost $137 altogether, working out to around roughly £82, which i don't think is bad at all for a shed load of make up, 4 books and a playsuit, however this has all highlighted to me just how much i spent on food while away... ouch!

first up is elf! the store was a lot smaller than i'd anticipated, but it was nicely laid out and the majority of the pricing was $3 which of course was an absolute delight as that works out to roughly £1.80. amongst the $3 items i bought were the tone correcting powder, white eyeshadow (which i intend to use as a highlighter,) mascara and setting mist, which is incredible value as these items usually cost around £3.75 which works out around $6, meaning i bagged all these items for half the price i would have paid if i were to buy them online - crazy good value! i also grabbed a couple of waterproof eyeliner pens as they were $1.50 each (however this shows, they're terrible...) and a couple of lip stains for $2 each. there was also a sign up saying if you spent over $20 you could grab a new prism eyeshadow palette for just $5 (usually $10), and after eyeing up the above palette and noticing that it vaguely resembled some of the shades in the naked 3 palette, i snapped it up as i'd not yet seen it available on the uk elf site.

ah, books! my main mission of the trip was to head to books of wonder to pick myself up a signed oliver jeffers book, and after much deliberation between two of his books, i laid 'the day the crayons quit' down and trotted off with 'the great paper caper' because of the variety in spread composition, ranging from simple shapes amongst white space to beautifully detailed full page illustrations; if you haven't checked out oliver jeffers' work, you really should! i think anyone from any walk of life can appreciate the jaw dropping beauty every brush stroke brings to his work. just wonderful! while browsing the shop, another book also caught my eye; "sparky!" as soon as i saw the cover i ran over to the book and squealed in sheer delight as it's the first book i've randomly picked up that's featured a sloth! it's full of charming illustrations by chris appelhans and now sits proudly on my new bookshelf.

we visited several independent bookstores throughout our visit, and while on 10th avenue we headed into one called 192 books where i picked up 'what's important is feeling'. after watching frozen to kill some time throughout our 8 hour flight there, i knew i wanted something to keep me occupied on our way back, and after being drawn in by the book title and the somewhat terrible cover design, i decided to pick the book up for a skim through. after reading lines about sexual promiscuity, cocaine abuse and difficulty conversing with others, i was intrigued enough to head to the counter and buy it. i'm still not entirely sure whether or not i enjoyed the book, but i'm not sure that's the point. it's made up of several short stories from different people's points of view that i assume the author based on people he's met throughout his years, and although it was odd, and even slightly uncomfortable in parts, it was definitely an interesting read and even provided a few laughs here and there.

the last book i picked up was 'show your work!' after recognising the cover design from the book 'steal like an artist' which i haven't yet read, but probably should after enjoying this. it's full of humorous anecdotes that give you insight into austin's journey as a creative and he talks you through effective ways of successfully promoting yourself, which largely lies in being a fan of what you do as well as a creator of it. one part in particular that has stuck with me is a part where he speaks about 'vampires', which are things (people, places etc.) that leave you feeling drained, lifeless and uninspired while they continue to thrive, and i thought it such an appropriate read for my exit of new york city as it had pretty much been my vampire for the past five days.

lastly is this gorgeous playsuit from forever 21. i'd never been in a forever 21 store before, so i was pleasantly surprised by all they had to offer - particularly the footwear - and thought it bizarre that the store seemed to only really stock summer clothes that seemed appropriate for 30 degree heat while at a festival while new york's current temperature was below freezing! i'd seen similar prints to this before which featured flowers printed over a tartan design, so when i spotted this that was a little bit different i thought i'd give it a try for just $17. also being a forever 21 newbie i was a little surprised that i couldn't quite squeeze myself into a medium and instead had to opt for a large, something i'm trying to forget about as the playsuit looks fab on anyway! i can't wait for the weather to warm up so i can team this with a straw hat and chunky sandals.
