A *Little* Bit of News

If you're a frequent reader of my blog you'll know that it's been a few months now since I was first contacted to ask if agency representation was something I'd be interested in, and I'm delighted to now announce that I'm represented by the lovely people at Advocate Art!

While my portfolio on their website is currently incomplete and is still being updated with all the illustrations that I've sent over to them, I was asked to create an illustration to feature in their calendar that they send out every year to their offices all around the world. The illustration could be of absolutely anything that I wanted, and seeing as I've had a thing for doodling bears as of late I cooked up an idea based around one. Because my last process post seemed to prove pretty popular, I thought I'd again document my process while creating this illo.

As ever, all my illos start with a pencil sketch.

I then decided on an appropriate colour scheme for the piece and started blocking in the colours to get a feel for how the piece would look once fully coloured.

I then coloured up the illustration in its entirety, but couldn't helping feeling that it lacked atmosphere and depth.

Lastly, I added a horizon to give a sense of atmosphere and brought some blue into the colour palette in the sky and the lake to give the illustration a little bit of contrast.

And that's the finished illustration! On a piece like this I'll normally spend a good 3 - 4 hours creating it in total; 1 - 2 hours sketching, then 2 - 3 hours colouring it in. Since leaving university I've really become a fan of colouring my pieces digitally because it makes the entire process of finding a suitable colour scheme so much easier!
