saturday scribbles

this week i'm sharing another few pages from my sketchbook in regards to my picture book. on monday i received feedback and my story was generally well received, however it was a mutual agreement between myself and my tutors that to use another sloth within my story wasn't really doing me many favours in terms of diversifying my portfolio, so i've spent a couple of days this week rethinking my protagonist and making some slight changes to my story – nothing too drastic, but enough to give me a chance to explore another creature!

in the end i settled on a tamandua, a type of anteater, simply because i loved how they move around (mostly on all fours, but they often stand on their hind legs) so clumsily and spend a lot of time tree dwelling as a sloth would, so altogether they made a pretty good (and super cute!) substitute. i always pictured mallory as a lost, confused sloth on the streets of new york, however the more i watch tamandua videos and doodle myself familiar with their anatomy, the more they're capturing my heart, and the more i can see mallory as one of them.

this week me and my coursemate also pitched our nhs work to the staff members that we've been liaising with since september, who then went onto pitch it to some people higher up the chain, and luckily they all loved it! we've also decided that we're going to enter the project into the creative conscience awards, so in preparation for its deadline in late march we've worked on a couple of smaller alterations before we perhaps have to pick it apart a little more and do a fair bit more work. i never really knew where i thought this project was going because it was sort of put on a back burner for a while until we really got to grips with our strategy, so it's exciting to think that it could potentially go ahead and be rolled out within the nhs nationally! here's to the next few months until graduation (gulp!), it'll be a lot of hard work, but it'll hopefully be worth it.

saturday scribbles

yeah, i know, i've got some explaining to do seeing as i haven't posted a saturday scribbles post (or sunday synopsis post, for that matter) for the last two weeks. last weekend i kind of had a legitimate excuse because i was away for the weekend visiting a friend for her 21st birthday, but i'd be lying to you if i said i hadn't just generally been feeling uninspired with my work and blog as of late.

since handing my dissertation in i've been focussing on my self promotion work and starting to think about my final project, and for the most part i've been feeling a bit uninspired and bummed out, by my self promotion work in particular. i'm still a bit unsure of where i want the content or aesthetics of my self promotion work to go, but i do know that i don't want to waste the opportunity to create another good piece of work for my portfolio, so it's something i really need to try and figure out, and pretty quickly, really.

on the flip side, i've been writing another picture book for my final project to enter into the macmillan prize again, and above you can see some of the rough page spreads that make up my dummy book that i'll be taking in for feedback on monday. i've no idea how the session will go, but i do know that it's the happiest, most motivated and most inspired i've felt with a piece of work throughout the entirety of third year, so that has to count for something. i love the freedom of working on my own texts because i have complete control over everything and the permission to add or take things away where i see necessary, which i felt held me back a little throughout my alice in wonderland work because it never felt quite as natural and effortless as i'd have liked it to, but i suppose i'm learning that i thrive creatively when i can completely become the author of my own work.

for now i hope you enjoy the little snippets into a story that was inspired almost a year ago now when i visited new york, and i hope to get the ball rolling again properly from now on and have lots to share every week regarding my progress while illustrating the book.

saturday scribbles

as of today there's only five days left of #illo_advent, which means that there's now only four days left until christmas day – crazy! i can't believe christmas day's almost here, i can't believe how quickly the last twenty days have passed, and i also can't believe that i've managed to scrape together twenty christmas puns, even if some are somewhat questionable! when i set out on this massive illustrated christmas pun endeavour i don't think i anticipated just how many twenty five was, so i'm pretty impressed with what i've managed. i'm at a point now where i've scraped my reserve bank dry and daily i'm floundering at around 11pm to try and think of and illustrate a pun before the clock strikes 12, and so far i've managed it but i'm wondering just when i'll have been bled completely dry and will instead doodle up something suitably festive but much less punny to suffice.

in other news, this week i finished off complete first drafts of my two inner alice in wonderland illustrations. i've sent them both off for feedback, and i'm hoping that they're pretty much there but will require a few tweaks that can be managed over the course of a few days so i can write them off and crack on with my other book covers as well as my nhs project which i'd so stupidly forgotten about until the coursemate i'm working alongside on the project dropped me a text reminding me of my duties... i've got shit for brains sometimes, i swear. for now i think i'm going to keep my alice in wonderland illustrations to myself and post them up here when they're good to go, but if it'd be of any interest to anyone to see a progress post about the project, detailing initial sketches, character design, compositional ideas and drafting the illustrations, do let me know and it can be arranged! week one of the christmas holidays is officially over, and i think i'm on track for getting my work done to a sufficient standard before heading back up to uni in january. fingers crossed!

saturday scribbles

a very late saturday scribbles post today, but i think i've just about made it in time! it's fair to say i've been extremely lazy this week, so a slap on the wrist is definitely necessary. i purchased a set of photoshop brushes earlier in the week in the hopes of creating more traditional looking digital work (the struggles of cheating your way around the system, eh) and so fair i'm failing to do so, but i'm practising nonetheless so it's not time wasted! i also decided to just have a little doodle of whatever came into my mind, so after daydreaming about carrot cake (as ever) i knocked together a bunny celebration illustration and it felt good to just doodle a scene for the hell of it.

saturday scribbles

i know, i know, i'm terrible. i'm well aware that the majority seem to actively oppose alliteration, but little old me just can't get enough of it. i'm not entirely sure, but it's simple and can be silly and it communicates on a level that i'm happy with an- yeah, i'm gonna stop. rambles aside, it's the introduction of a new weekly post here on my blog: saturday scribbles!

now i've done with uni for the year, i'll be moving back home and attempting to stay as inspired, motivated and claw-handed as possible, so i thought a feature on my blog ought to be encouragement enough for me to not get lazy and let creativity take a back seat throughout the summer, because if it did, i'd have to clock in to let you know about it, uh oh! whether it's one doodle or a dozen, i'll be sharing whatever it is i've been scribbling throughout the previous week to ensure my creative juices keep on keepin' on. plus it helps to incorporate a little more illustration work into my blog, which can only ever be a good thing (in my eyes, at least.)

okay, so! this week i've been doodling new blog design plans and an abundance of doggies. i've wanted to revamp my blog for a while now just because it's generally a fun project and i think it's helpful to keep my blog style up-to-date with my illustrative style, so i figured summer's the perfect time to jump right in. i've also been working (very slowly, may i add) on an a-z of lots of doggies. a-z illustration projects are very popular, however i'm not surprised because it gives you a wide range of things to draw; even within a single species there are so many variations! even though it's been done over and over again, i think it's a fun mini project that really helps you to develop your visual language and clearly set aside your work from that of others.

and there we have it, there are my offerings from the previous week! i hope you'll jump on board with this feature and enjoy the little peeks into my sketchbook that i'll now be sharing.
